E-wallets grew to 26 million over past three years: CBE

The number of e-wallets grew in the Egyptian market over the past three years to record 26 million, up from nine million in previous years, with 23 banks introducing related services, Sub-Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Ihab Nasr stated on Sunday.

Subsequently, transactions using e-wallets increased to EGP 268 billion in value over the same course, up from EGP 88 billion in previous years, said Nasr.

Additionally, e-commerce transactions inched up from EGP 16 billion to EGP 30 billion as well.

Nasr added that e-transactions through e-points of sales (PoS) rose during the same period to EGP 170 billion in value, up from EGP 110 billion in previous years.

Moreover, the number of PoS increased by 978 percent over the past three years to reach 740,000, up from 68.

Nasr also noted that governmental collected a total of EGP 662 billion through banking channels.
