Benoun tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Morocco just before the outgoing Africa Cup of Nations last January.

He returned to Cairo after being dropped from the Moroccan squad that participated in the continental tournament, and examinations have revealed that he suffering from post-COVID-19 complications.

The international defender missed Ahly’s campaign in the FIFA Club World Cup, which saw the Red Devils clinch the bronze medal for the second consecutive time.

“Benoun needs another six weeks of rest as he is still suffering from post-COVID-19 complications,” Ahly’s doctor Ahmed Abou Abla told the club’s official website on Monday.

“The player will undergo tests in the coming days to evaluate his medical condition”

Benoun’s last appearance with the team was on 22 December, when Ahly won the African Super Cup at the expense of Moroccan side Raja.

The 28-year-old, who marshalled Ahly's defence since his arrival in summer of 2020, made only 10 appearances with the team this season in all competitions.
