This is the first time for Youssef and his production label to seal a deal which will result in a series to be streamed exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries.
Co-created by Youssef and Pam Brady, the title of the comedy series has not been revealed. The plot focuses on “the experiences of a Muslim-American family that must learn how to code-switch as they navigate the early 2000s: a time of fear, war, and the rapid expansion of the boy-band industrial complex,” the media reported.
A rising star in the US television industry, Youssef, an actor, comedian and director, was born in New York City to Egyptian parents, and raised in a Muslim household.
He graduated from the political science and economics department of Rutgers University in Newark. It was during his studies that he enrolled in the performing arts school, William Esper Studio.
He made his acting debut in the main role of a sitcom titled See Dad Run (2012-2019). While working on the sitcom, Youssef was also cast in the American comedy film Why Him? (2016) and Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot (2018).
His television series, Ramy, debuted on Hulu in 2019.
The show is a semi-biographical series that revolves around Youssef, a millennial first-generation Muslim American born to immigrant parents in the US. The series won several awards such as the Peabody Award, the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival, and the Ruderman Family Foundation Seal of Authentic Representation.
In 2020, the series brought Youssef the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy. The actor was nominated for the Golden Globe for the subsequent season of Ramy in 2021, but did not receive it.
In 2020, he received the Best Actor in a Comedy Series award from the Online Film & Television Association (2020).
The show and Ramy Youssef were nominated for dozens of other prestigious awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award.
