The Pharaohs host Senegal at Cairo Stadium on Friday in the first leg of an anticipated World Cup qualifying playoff, with a place in the Qatar finals later this year at stake. The second leg takes place in Dakar four days later.
Pyramids FC winger Ramadan Sobhi, who had already fallen down the pecking order, is out injured, meaning Marmoush's only challenger for a spot on the left is Trezeguet, who has been revitalized since sealing a loan move from Aston Villa to Istanbul Basaksehir in February.
The prospect of Trezeguet's place being taken by a little-known footballer would have been unthinkable a year ago, but a serious knee injury the former had picked up in April 2021 sidelined him for long and left Queiroz contemplating other options after he took over in September.
Then came Marmoush, who is playing on loan at Stuttgart from fellow German club Wolfsburg, with Queiroz giving him a sudden call-up for a vital double-header against Libya in the World Cup qualifiers last year.
He marked his debut with a thunderbolt as Egypt beat Libya 1-0 at home before providing an assist in a 3-0 away victory over the same opponents.
Trezeguet had recovered from his injury just ahead of the Nations Cup in January, but it was too late to pip Marmoush to a place in Egypt's starting line-up for the biennial tournament.
Marmoush was Queiroz's preferred option, featuring in all seven games as Egypt reached the final in Cameroon before losing to Senegal on penalties following a 0-0 draw.
However, he made minimal impact and was criticized back home for failing to score or dish out any assists. Trezeguet, on the other hand, made some substitute appearances but looked not fully fit, even though he netted a precious extra-time winner in a 2-1 quarter-final victory over Morocco.
Both look sharp going into the Senegal clash, giving Queiroz a fresh selection dilemma.
Marmoush took his tally to three Bundesliga goals in 17 appearances so far this season with a superb free-kick in Stuttgart's 3-2 victory over Augsburg last weekend while Trezeguet has scored four goals in five matches since joining Basaksehir.
Ahram Online has learnt that Marmoush is likely to get the nod against Senegal, although Trezeguet is still waiting in the wings.
