The second oldest and founded in 1908, Cairo University is the only Egyptian university that has made it into the top 100 list and among the top 300 universities in the world in major scientific sectors, Mohamed Osman El-Khosht, president of Cairo University, said on Thursday.

The Egyptian university occupied a 51-100 category place in the majors of civil and structural engineering, petroleum engineering, and hospitality and leisure management, El-Khosht added in a statement issued by Cairo University's Facebook page.

It held a 51-70 position in dentistry and came in the 81st place in pharmacy as per the QS ranking, he added, noting that hospitality and dental majors made their first appearance in the QS rankings coming among the top 100 global specialties.

The university was also listed in the 271st position globally in the field of arts and human science and came 134th in technology and engineering, and 178th in medicine field.

It was also listed in the 292nd position in natural science and 226th in administrative and social science, he added.

The university's appearance among the top 300 universities worldwide in the five major scientific sectors in the QS publication is "a great leap," El-Khosht noted, attributing the progress to what he called "the best strategic planning adopted at all levels to lessen the knowledge gap with global advanced universities."

According to QS overall ranking of universities for 2022, the American University in Cairo comes first among Egyptian universities and the 445th worldwide, while Cairo University comes second locally and between the 571st 580th place internationally. Ain Shams University came in third locally and between the 801st and 1,000th internationally.

Founded in 1990, QS specialises in the analysis of higher education institutions around the world through its research and professional services division.

The UK company evaluates universities as per six metrics: Academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio.
