Today's ministerial committee meeting was held in Amman under the chairmanship of Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and in the presence of Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul-Gheit and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
In addition to Egypt, the meeting was attended by the committee members of Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Qatar, Morocco and the UAE.
During the meeting, Shoukry reiterated Egypt's "steadfast" stance concerning the Palestinian cause, foreign ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez said.
The meeting, which was followed by a separate meeting of the committee with Jordan's King Abdullah II on same day, was held following the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli forces after last week's Friday prayers.
Thousands of Palestinians clashed with Israeli police after the storming of the mosque, which is the third holiest site in Islam. Dozens of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli police, according to the Associated Press.
At least 25 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and 14 people in Israel have been killed by Palestinian attackers in the last two weeks, also according to an AP count.
The committee warned that such acts and violations constitute a blatant provocation and an attack on the feelings of Muslims, and it had the predictable results of triggering an outbreak of violence, which poses a threat to security and stability in the region and beyond.
The committee also described the Israeli escalation as a flagrant violation of international resolutions.
Israel has to respect the rights of Muslims to pray freely in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to preserve the existing historical and legal status of the holy sites in Jerusalem, the committee said.
In addition, the Arab ministerial committee urged the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to compel Israel to abide by the principles of international law and international treaties and conventions and to stop its dangerous attacks against the Palestinian people.
The committee urged for a two-state solution in accordance with UN resolutions and along the pre-1967 borders with Jerusalem as the capital of a viable, independent and contiguous Palestinian state.
