Arsenal’s Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny says he is open to sign a new contract with the Premier League club even if he does not receive the needed guarantees that he would be playing on a regular basis.

The future of the 29-year-old player with the Gunners remains in doubt, as his current contract with the club is due to run out by the end of the current season.

“Of course! I always love a challenge and give 100 percent all the time. I don’t decide who plays but I keep going to training sessions to show how good I am and to convince them to let me play,”  the Pharaohs player was quoted as saying by the Independent on Sunday when asked if he would be happy to stay even if he was not playing.

“If I don’t play, I keep going until I get my chance. If Arsenal says, ‘we want you,’ I don’t think about leaving. This team has been my family for six years. I love this club,” he stressed.

Elneny, who joined Arsenal in 2016 from Swiss side Basel FC, spent the 2019/20 season on loan at Besiktas and was linked with a return to Turkey in January before finally staying at Arsenal.

After a long time of warming the bench, Elneny booked a regular place in Arsenal’s starting lineups in back-to-back games, with the Egyptian international delivering outstanding performances in the latest two games — Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Chelsea and Saturday’s 3-1 win over Manchester United.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed the performance of Elneny ahead of their clash against Manchester United, saying that he is one of the most important players on the team.

Meanwhile, Elneny disclosed that “[Arteta] didn’t say anything [to persuade me to stay in January].

“He just trusts me, and he puts me in the big games. And I have to thank him for that.”

“I will keep going and not think about anything else; just focus on my performances to help the team reach our goal. The contract and stuff, I’m just waiting for the club to decide what they want,” he said.

“I’m really happy to be one of the starting 11 for these two games. I gave everything in training to book my place in every game, and I got my chance and I think I did well. Most importantly, we won the two games,” the Egyptian player concluded.

Arsenal currently lie fourth in the Premier League table with 60 points from 33 matches, 20 behind leaders Manchester City.
