ZAMALEK’s volleyball team won the Egyptian Cup for the second time in a row after overcoming crosstown arch-rivals Ahly, reports Abeer Anwar.

Zamalek took the two out of three game series 2-1.

In their first game, Zamalek blanked Ahly in three sets, 25-22, 34-32 and 25-21.

In the second, Ahly levelled the series at one apiece, winning 25-21, 24-26, 27-25, 15-25, and 15-12.

That set up the deciding showdown played on Sunday in the Hassan Mustafa Hall in 6 October city and which Zamalek won 3-1.

It was the seventh cup title for Zamalek who won the league and cup titles this year.

“The players were lions today and they were up to the challenge,” Ahmed Mortada, Zamalek’s board member and supervisor of the club’s court sports, said. “We are all proud of them and they made all Zamalek fans very proud.”

This year Zamalek collected the national titles in basketball, handball and now volleyball for the first time in their history. The sweep was a major victory for Zamalek’s President Mortada Mansour who was recently re-elected. Zamalek signed a number of professional players and coaches in the three sports and the new signings apparently paid off handsomely.
