Members of the Egyptian police force distributed on Monday roses and gifts to pedestrians and drivers nationwide in celebration of Eid El-Fitr, a statement by the country’s Ministry of Interior said.

The gesture is meant to “activate the societal role of all security sectors by celebrating with Egyptians various occasions in a way that contributes to deepening the bonds of trust between policemen and citizens,” read the statement.

Millions of Egyptians partook in the Eid El-Fitr prayers earlier today at hundreds of outdoor spaces attached to large mosques nationwide after the Egyptian authorities ended a ban on outdoor Eid prayers, which had been in place since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

Furthermore, the ministry announced that it is intensifying security measures and the implementation of large-scale security plans to ensure the safety of the celebrations of the Islamic feast and preserve the public order.

Eid El-Fitr is one of two major religious holidays in Islam, the second being Eid El-Adha, which falls on the 10th day of Dhu El-Hijjah — the 12th month of the Islamic Hijri calendar.

Egypt’s Cabinet designated the period between 30 April and 5 May a paid holiday for public employees, extending from Labour Day — which fell on 1 May — to the end of the Eid El-Fitr holidays.
