Egyptian winger Amr Warda claimed the Cypriot League best player award in the 2021-22 season after his superb performance with Anorthosis Famagusta.

The 28-year-old made 39 appearances with Anorthosis this season, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists.

Anorthosis finished fourth in the Protathlima Cyta table with 38 points, eight points behind leaders Apol. Limassol.

“I am very happy with the award and I want to thank all people as I feel good in this country. I feel I live with my family here,” Warda told reporters after receiving the award.

Warda joined Cypriot club Anorthosis last August coming from the Greek club PAOK FC.

He had joined PAOK coming from fellow Greek side Volos in January 2021, making a fine impact and netting three goals in 27 appearances in all competitions.

The former Ahly player, who has made 30 international appearances so far, began his overseas career in August 2015 when he signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Greek club Panetolikos, on a free transfer from the Cairo giants.

“Since the first day I arrived here I told myself I have to enjoy football here,” Warda added.

“I came here and decided to achieve something, so now I won this award,” the Egyptian winger said.

Warda’s European football career has been turbulent due to accusations of a lack of commitment and unethical behaviour.

In the summer of 2017, around seven months after he joined PAOK for the first time, he moved to Feirense, but the Portuguese side annulled the loan agreement just three days later following allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Warda had three other loan stents out of PAOK, two at Atromitos and one at Larissa amid several reported disputes with PAOK’s management and coaches at different times.

Warda was a member of the Egyptian national team which played in the 2018 World Cup and in the 2019 African Cup of Nations, but was dropped from the team after new accusations of sexual harassment against him.
