Sheikh Mohamed was elected president on Saturday by the UAE’s Federal Supreme Council — which comprises the rulers of each emirate — after the death of former president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Friday.

El-Sisi wished success to the new Emirati president, encouraging him to “continue the path of development and prosperity for the Gulf country as well as complementing the rational policies and prosperity attained by the country’s former presidents Sheikh Khalifa and Sheikh Zayed.”

Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who is now the third president of the UAE, served as the crown prince of Abu Dhabi since 2004.

Earlier today, El-Sisi headed to Abu Dhabi to offer his condolences over the death of Sheikh Khalifa, who died on Friday at the age of 73.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan served as the second president of the UAE and the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi since 2004.

Egypt declared a three-day mourning period in honour of the departed president.
