Egyptian indie-folk singer Shereen Abdo and her band will be performing in a free-entry concert at the Maq‘ad of Sultan Qaitbey (MASQ) on Saturday 28 May.

Shereen Abdo

Abdo, known for infusing traditional folk music with diverse and progressive contemporary sounds, is expected to introduce some famous covers like ‘Betghanny Li-Meen?’, ‘El-Leil El-Hady’, ‘Aho Da Elly Sar’, and ‘Ya Khelly’, as well as some of her originals like ‘Akher Leila Fe December’ and ‘Bokra.’

Considering herself a self-taught musician, Abdo — who also works in media and music management — has previously collaborated with some internationally recognised musicians such as Ziad Rahbani, Fathy Salama, and Sheikh Zein Mahmoud.

Abdo’s performance is part of a larger programme at the MASQ that also includes the opening of the ‘I am One and also Two’ art exhibition that marks this year’s Europe Day, as well as the launch of the Sultan Fair for handicrafts makers, which is part of the ‘Desert of the Mamluks Initiative.’

Moreover, these events are part of the larger ‘Heritage for the Living in the City of the Dead Project’ that is being implemented by ARCHiNOS Architecture and primarily funded by the EU.
