The court sentenced the nine men to death by hanging and one other to life in prison for the killings that took place in the city of Maghagha, located in the north of the governorate.
The victims were reportedly killed in retaliation for the killing and mutilation of one of the defendants’ relatives.
The court also sentenced another defendant in the trial to 15 years in prison.
Vendetta shootings and blood feuds between families or tribes are not uncommon in Upper Egypt. To deal with the violence the government has enlisted the help of religious institutions like Al-Azhar, which launched an initiative for reconciliation between families.
