In a weekly Cabinet meeting, Madbouly stated that climate change is one of the main issues in Egypt and world’s agenda.

The premier also stressed that Egypt will not spare any effort during its presidency of the COP27 in moving forward from the pledges phase to the real implementation phase in order to come up with practical and realistic measures to face global phenomenon.

On Thursday, Egypt launched its 2050 National Strategy for Climate Change five months ahead of the COP27. The strategy aims to effectively address the repercussions of climate change in a way that contributes to improving the quality of life for Egyptians, achieving sustainable development and sustainable economic growth, and preserving natural resources and ecosystems.

The strategy also aims to enhance Egypt’s climate change leadership internationally.

Earlier in May, Egypt revealed the COP27’s official logo, which represents the cultural identity of Egypt and Africa.

The logo highlights Egypt’s unique cultural identity along with the African influences on ancient Egyptian civilisation, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 11 May, with its design displaying an African sun embracing the sun of the ancient Egyptian deity Aten as it rises over a new horizon.

“The sun — a source of life and a sign of hope — is a deeply rooted symbol in African civilisation,” the foreign ministry said, adding that the rising and setting sun refers to the cycle of life and renewed hope for a better world, as its rays provide the energy needed for the continuation of life.

“The sun of Aten, with its rays ending in hands, refers to the generosity of nature as it provides the means for life, welfare, and prosperity,” the statement continued, adding that in the middle of the logo, there is a new horizon that represents hope for a better future.

Coinciding with its preparations to host the COP27, Sharm El-Sheikh — which will be completely free of single-use plastic bags as of this June — is witnessing the implementation of other measures and various environmentally-friendly projects in the fields of electric transportation, waste management, use of renewable energy, and green tourism in hotels and diving centres.

On Tuesday, the governorate of South Sinai announced that 27 national projects will be finalised in Sharm El-Sheikh ahead of the COP27, including the construction of a flyover on the Middle Road (King Salman Road), as well as five axes linking El-Salam Road, the Middle Road, and the Ring Road.

The projects also include the construction of an environmentally friendly local unit building, the Central Park, a commercial mall, a banks complex in El-Nour district, three solar power plants, two garages for electric-powered public transport buses, and electric vehicle fast charging stations.
