Shoukry is scheduled to sign the agreement for Egypt to host COP27 on the sidelines of the 56th session of the subsidiary bodies – Bonn UN Climate Conference – that is taking place from 6 to 16 June.

The 56th session of subsidiary bodies aims to lay the groundwork for success at COP27, according to the UN, as governments in Bonn will focus on work in the key areas of mitigation, adaptation, and supporting developing countries, particularly financially.

The top Egyptian diplomat met on Tuesday with the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) Patricia Espinosa, where they discussed how the 56th session of the subsidiary bodies for Implementation (SBI56) can contribute to the progress required and expected in the upcoming COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh.

During the meeting with Espinosa, the importance of the SBI56 was emphasised in terms of enhancing global climate action, especially providing scientific and technological advice as well as the effective implementation of climate pledges and related agreements, particularly the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Shoukry also met with the Climate Action Network (CAN), which is the largest group of civil society organisations working in the field of climate change. The CAN includes over 1,300 environmental non-governmental organisations in over 130 countries.

The Egyptian FM met on Wednesday with the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change on the sidelines of the SBI meetings, where Shoukry stated that Egypt is keen to put the African concerns on climate change at the forefront of the topics and issues to be at address at COP27.

Shoukry said that Africa is most affected by the negative repercussions of climate change despite being the smallest contributor to emissions, and that African countries are facing difficulty in obtaining the needed climate funding to deal with these repercussions.

Shoukry emphasised the priority the Egyptian presidency of COP27 gives to implementing climate pledges and turning them into reality.
