The decision was taken following a meeting earlier today between Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and the country's Supreme Committee for the Management of Pandemics.

The cabinet's statement did not say when the decision will go into effect.

Arrivals to Egypt were required to either provide a negative PCR test performed 72 hours before departure, or an accredited COVID-19 vaccination certificate showing they were fully vaccinated 14 days before departure, or conduct any coronavirus tests approved by the Egyptian Ministry of Health at Egyptian ports of entry.

With today's decision, Egypt joins several countries in lifting coronavirus restrictions on travellers as pandemic-related infections fall globally.

Egypt has been witnessing a sharp drop in the numbers of coronavirus infections and deaths, as indicated by the health ministry’s weekly update on the pandemic nationwide.

The average daily coronavirus infection and deaths tolls in Egypt have dropped to single digits in recent months.

Egypt, which relies on tourism revenues as a vital source of foreign currency, has been taking measures to support the tourism sector's recovery amid challenges posed by the pandemic as well as the Russia-Ukraine war.

In April, the country's health ministry cancelled exceptional COVID-focused disinfection of planes after each flight, returning to normal sanitisation procedures.

Acting Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar told today's meeting that around 86.6 million doses of various types of coronavirus vaccines have been administrated so far, and 4.5 million booster shots have been received.

Egypt has a reserve of around 57.5 million vaccine doses, the minister added.
