This was done in accordance with Egypt's constitution, which requires both bodies to be located in the capital.
Construction of the NAC started in 2015 and is taking place on 700 square kilometres, which is nearly twice the area of Cairo governorate prior to redrawing its administrative borders. The NAC is located 60km from Cairo in between Cairo-Suez and Cairo-Ain Sokhna roads. The new city is set to house 6.5 million people when completed.
The new capital will be connected to Greater Cairo via various transport networks that include the country's first monorail and the first light rail transit (LRT) system.
