After beating Petrojet 2-0 and reaching the final of the Egypt Cup, Ahly’s new coach Ricardo Soares announced that the players’ performance will improve in the future as he still needs a while to hash out the specifics of his strategy.

Ahly eased past second-division side Petrojet 2-0 to reach the final of the 2020 Egypt Cup — which has been delayed due to multiple factors, including the coronavirus pandemic — giving new coach Ricardo Soares a winning start and setting up a clash against Cairo archrivals Zamalek.

“The victory over Petrojet is important for the team, as it’s our first game,” Soares was quoted by Ahly’s official website after the game.

“Preparation for the Petrojet game was very difficult, as I took over this position only two days ago, and I am happy with the players’ desire to achieve victory,” the Portuguese coach added.

Ahly announced the signing of Portuguese coach Ricardo Soares for two years on Thursday to replace caretaker coach Sami Komsan, who took charge after Pitso Mosimane’s departure.

“We still have a long way to go, and the club’s performance will improve in the future,” he assured.

“The players tried to implement my tactics, and I am happy with their efforts during the game.”

An early goal from playmaker Magdi Afsha and a second-half header from defender Mohamed Abdel-Moneim — who is back in action after recovering from an injury — gave a workmanlike Ahly side a much-needed win in Soares’ debut.

Ahly will face Zamalek in the final game of the 2020 Egypt Cup on 21 July.

Zamalek will be eyeing a domestic double victory after winning the Premier League last season. Meanwhile, Ahly are seeking to add an Egypt Cup triumph to the Champions League title they clinched last season.
