Ahly executive director Saad Shalaby told local media on Monday that his club thanks CAF for restoring the two legs African Champions League final. He also praised CAF’s new tournament.

“There was an invitation from the president of CAF to Mahmoud Al-Khatib a while ago to talk about development in African football, and one of the proposals was the establishment of the African Super League,” said Shalaby.

“But we do not know anything about the tournament so far, and we support any development in African football, especially since there are huge financial prizes,” he added.

Meanwhile, Zamalek’s football general supervisor Amir Mortada also revealed that his club welcomes the African Super League due to its prizes.

“The African Champions League has become unrewarding because its prizes are very weak, it is close to one contract of a Zamalek player. We do not have information about the Super League yet, but we feel positive about it,” Amir told local media.

CAF announced on Sunday in a statement that a new continental tournament will kick off in August 2023 with $100 million prize money. The statement read that more details will be announced on August 10 at a CAF meeting in Tanzania.

“The competition will breathe new life into African club competition. Winners and participants of the inaugural African Super League will receive significant prize money and profits from the tournament will include substantial solidarity payments to all 54 CAF Member Associations,” CAF said in a statement published on its official website on Monday.
