Despite the domination of streaming platforms in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, Egyptian youngsters and families are proving that cinema outings are still among their favourite activities during feasts and public holidays.
Due to the tough circumstances the movie industry has been witnessing in recent years, Eid El-Adha week — which marks the official start of the summer season — saw a competition between only three films — Kira & El-Gin, Bahebak (I Love You), and Amohom (Their Uncle).
Coming in first in the race because it released earlier is the patriotic action flick Kira & El-Gin, which has reportedly collected almost EGP 65 million in two weeks.
Kira & El-Gin stars popular actors Karim Abdel-Aziz, Ahmed Ezz, Hend Sabry, Sayed Ragab, Asma Aboul-Yazeid, Ahmed Malek, Huda El-Mufti, Aly Kassem, and others.
Produced by Synergy Film, Kira & El-Gin’s music scores were composed by Emmy-nominated Hesham Nazih. The crew also includes director of photography Ahmed El-Morsy and editor Ahmed Hafez.
Directed by Marwan Hamed, the film is based on Ahmed Mourad’s best-selling novel, 1919, that is based on historical events during the time of the 1919 Egyptian Revolution against the British occupation.
Meanwhile, Tamer Hosny’s romantic comedy Bahebak is reportedly collecting almost EGP 28 million in eight days, putting the pop star among the top trending music topics with various songs from the film like Habita Ya Nas, Wenta B3eed, and Hadla3ny.
Produced by Hossam Hosny, the film — which co-stars Hana El-Zahed — has caught wide social media controversy as Hosny’s name is also in the credits as a director, scriptwriter, and music scores producer too.
Finally, action comedy Amohom starring Mohamed Emam has brought in almost EGP 25 million in a week according to local reports, proving the flourishing stardom of the son of megastar Adel Emam.
