"Egypt voices its categorical condemnation of the attack, asserting the importance of respecting the resolutions of international law in relation to protecting civilians," read a statement by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

The ministry also offered its full support for the sovereignty of the Iraqi territories and of 'all measures and decisions taken by the Iraqi government to maintain security and stability of the country.'

Egypt also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Turkish artillery shells struck the resort area in the semi-autonomous Kurdish-run region on Wednesday, killing at least eight Iraqi tourists and wounding over 20, Iraqi Kurdish government and hospital officials told the Associated Press, adding that all the casualties were Iraqi citizens.

Turkey, which has military bases near the site, regularly carries out airstrikes into northern Iraq targeting elements of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has led an insurgency in southeast Turkey since 1984, which has killed tens of thousands of people.

Ankara has pressed Baghdad to root out PKK elements from the northern region. Iraq, in turn, has said Turkey's ongoing attacks are in breach of its sovereignty.

Iraq's government condemned Wednesday's attack, calling it a ``flagrant violation of Iraq's sovereignty.''

Iraq summoned Ankara's ambassador to Baghdad over the attack and its state agency said the government will call back its charge d'affaires in Ankara.

For its part, Turkey has rejected its responsibility for the attack, with its Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu calling on the Iraqi authorities to not fall for this "trap."

Turkish military operations in Iraq have always been against the outlawed PKK, and the attack on Dohuk was carried out by "terrorists," Cavusoglu told state broadcaster TRT Haber on Thursday, according to Reuters.

The attack came hours after two Iraqi federal police officers were killed and four others injured in clashes with Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in the Salahuddin province.
