Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival's 38 edition to celebrate late cinematographer Abya Farid

During its 38th edition scheduled for October 2022, the Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival will celebrate Egyptian cinematographer Abya Farid, who died 40 years ago.

Born in 1948, Farid is regarded as the first Egyptian woman cinematographer.

She joined the photography department at the Higher Institute of Cinema where she later taught and began working as an assistant to leading cinematographers, such as Wahid Farid. She also assisted DOP Said Samy in his many feature films and five documentary films.

She was also the director of photography for the documentary film The Sunflowers by Khairy Bishara, among other films.

Farid won the Best Cinematography award for the film Mirhan at the National Festival of Short Films and Documentaries in 1973. 

One of the oldest film festivals in Egypt, the Alexandria Mediterranean Countries Film Festival's 38th edition will also honour renowned director Mohamed Abdel-Aziz.

The festival is an annual event organised by the Egyptian Association for Film Writers and Critics, under the auspices of the ministries of culture, information, and tourism, and focuses on the cultural riches of the Mediterranean Basin.
