I will introduce a dominating football but need time: Ahly coach Soares after cup failure

After losing the 2020-2021 Egypt Cup title to arch-rivals Zamalek on Thursday evening, Ahly’s new Portuguese coach Ricardo Soares said that he will introduce a dominating football but needs time.

“I will  introduce a dominating football in Ahly against all opponents,” Soares told the post game’s press conference, but stressed that "this will take time to implement."

“We suffer both from injuries as well as a tight schedule,” the Portuguese coach said.

The 47-year-old Soares took the helm at Ahly in June following the sudden departure of South African coach Pitso Mosimane.

With the 2-1 victory over arch rivals Ahly 2-1 in Cairo International Stadium, Zamalek claimed on Thursday their 28th Egypt Cup title.

“We are all angry after the loss but we have to look forward. We tried to make more scoring chances and we were close to going to the deserved extra time.”

An outstanding first half performance from the White Knights saw them go up 2-0 on a lacklustre Ahly with goals from Ahmed ‘Zizo’ El-Sayed and Emam Ashour at minutes six and 30.

In the second half, the Red Devils regained their composure and Hossam Hassan pulled one back in the 55th minute, but that proved to be no more than a consolation goal as the team failed to equalise.

“Zamalek’s two goals were easy to score as the ball was under control of our defence but the mistake in the first goal was fatal given the players’ experience,” the Portuguese coach added.

“I am confident that Ahly will be a very strong team in a short time after the injured players return, and you will witness what I promise,” Soares added.
