Ahly's injury problems were compounded after striker Mohamed Sherif was ruled out of the rest of the season due to a groin injury, the club said on Saturday.

Sherif tore a groin muscle during Ahly's 2-1 loss to Zamalek in the Egypt Cup final on Thursday. He was taken off in the first half, making way for Hossam Hassan, who scored Ahly's second-period consolation.

"Mohamed Sherif needs a rehabilitation period of up to two months before he can resume training," Ahly said in a statement on their official website.

The 26-year-old was Ahly's outstanding performer last season, finishing as the Egyptian Premier League's top scorer with 21 goals. However, he suffered a dip in form this term, netting only seven league goals in 20 appearances.

Young midfielder Ahmed Nabil, better known as Kouka, is also expected to miss the rest of the season after injuring his hamstring, with Ahly saying he will be sidelined for up to three weeks. The league season ends in late August.

But in more positive news, Mozambican winger Luis Miquissone and South African forward Percy Tau have been declared fit after recovering from injuries.

Tau's season has been disrupted by successive injury problems while Miquissone, who joined from Tanzania's Simba SC last summer, has struggled to hold down a regular place.

Tau played 28 games with Ahly, scoring eight goals since joining the Reds from English club Brighton last summer.

Right-back Akram Tawfik has also returned to training after a lengthy absence. The 24-year-old underwent a knee ligament surgery last January.

Ahly are third in the Egyptian Premier League table with 48 points and two games in hand, nine points behind leaders and title holders Zamalek.
