Four of the plays participating in the 15th Egyptian National Theatre Festival
The plays taking part in the festival include those produced by bodies operating under the umbrella of the Ministry of Culture — five produced by the Theatre Artistic House, five by the General Authority of Culture Palaces, two produced by the Hanger Theatre, two from the Cultural Development Fund, two from the Folkloric Arts House, and two from the Cairo Operas House.
There are also plays in the line-up by independent troupes, amateur theatre companies, NGOs, centres operating under the Ministry of Youths and Sports, Egyptian universities, and troupes from the High Institute of Theatrical Arts.
The plays will be staged across all theatres in Cairo, with each play getting two runs.
Among the festival’s highlights are: El-Hafid (The Grandson), staged by the National Theatre Company and directed by Youssef El-Mansour; Love in the Times of Cholera from the El-Talia Theatre and directed by El-Saeed Mansy; Hamlet Upside Down directed by Mazen El-Gharabawy; El-Madbakh (The Kitchen) by an independent theatre troupe directed by Mohamed Adel; and What the Hell Am I Doing Here directed by Carol Akkad.
The winning performances will be announced during the closing ceremony on 8 August. Prizes will be given for the best play, director, actor, actress, scenography, costume design, and light design.
The festival is presided over by Youssef Ismail, who is helming it for the third edition in a row.
