Shtayyeh made the statement in a Palestinian cabinet meeting held to discuss the three-day Israeli assault on Gaza that left 44 Palestinians dead and hundreds injured.

US President Joe Biden also thanked President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and senior Egyptian officials for their central role in mediating a ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic Jihad that ended three days of fighting.

The ceasefire came into effect on Sunday at 11:30 PM local time (8:30 GMT) after Egypt conducted intense communications with both sides to contain the escalation.

The meeting also discussed the needs of the strip’s health and service sector.

Shtayyeh further noted that the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Palestine today, hoping that it will result in providing international protection for the Palestinian people.
