Yet, Ukraine of all countries has recently announced its support for Israel’s last attack against Gaza, which reaped yet more lives of innocent civilians, including women and children.
The term “apartheid” is becoming increasingly associated with Israel. More and more we hear calls from around the world to sanction it for its flagrant human rights violations. Last month, the Brazilian congress convened a special session to express solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Its members underscored the need to speak out against the crimes Israel commits daily against the Palestinian people. Silence was collusion, they said. They also called for an end to the inhumane blockade that has been imposed on Gaza for 16 years.
This month, Honduras announced that it is considering moving its embassy in Israel back to Tel Aviv. Last year, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, a close friend of Washington’s, moved his country’s embassy to Jerusalem, recognising occupied Jerusalem as the Israeli capital following Donald Trump’s lead. Hernandez has since been extradited to the US on drug trafficking charges. His successor is President Xiomara Castro.
Last week, 38 Palestinians were killed in Gaza in an unprovoked surprise attack. Among the victims were six children. Israel claimed that it had received intelligence that some Palestinian factions were plotting to attack the country. Ukraine declared its support for Israel without a moment’s hesitation. Its ambassador to Isreal, Yevgen Korniychuk, said that Kyiv stood by Israel in its struggle for “self defence”. Such a stance comes as no surprise from a government whose president describes himself as a Zionist, refers to his country as a second Israel and has previously come out in support of the Israeli occupying power and its brutal practices.
What is amazing, though, is how, in virtually the same breath, such people appeal to the international community to help their country in the face of an armed aggression, as though the Palestinian people had not suffered the same fate for over 70 years. The truth is that Israeli aggression and occupation has killed and maimed Palestinian women, children and young people for several generations. It razed Palestinian fields and villages and demolished the homes in which Palestinians had lived for hundreds and, indeed, thousands of years.
