The vehicle overturned when the driver lost control over the steering wheel, reported a team from the prosecution's office in Ismailia at the site of the accident.
Fourteen ambulance vehicles were dispatched to the scene, transferring the injured -- most of them sustained severe injuries -- to Ismailia Medical Complex. The dead were transferred to Fayed morgue pending prosecution inspection.
The Ismailia Prosecution Office is conducting an investigation into the incident.
Road accidents take place on a near-daily basis in Egypt, which has historically suffered from poorly maintained road infrastructure and loosely applied traffic regulations.
The country has tightened its road laws and launched the National Road Project in 2014 to improve the country’s road network.
By 2019, Egypt had climbed to the 28th place in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report in terms of the quality of its road infrastructure, compared to the 118th position in 2014.
Egypt recorded a 9.3 percent drop in traffic injuries in 2021 compared to 2020, according to a recent report released by the country’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) in July 2022.
There were 51,511 traffic injuries in Egypt in 2021, down from 56,789 in 2020, CAPMAS added.
