The bus, which was carrying 50 passengers from Cairo to Luxor, collided with a truck carrying bricks on the Eastern Desert Road.

Ambulances were dispatched to the scene and took the injured, who are from Upper Egypt, to Public Minya Hospital to receive the necessary treatment.

A team of investigators was formed to inspect the accident site and victims' bodies; a technical committee from the governorate's traffic department was also formed to determine the causes of the accident.

Road accidents take place on a near-daily basis in Egypt, which has historically suffered from poorly maintained road infrastructure and loosely applied traffic regulations.

The country has tightened its road laws and launched the National Road Project in 2014 to improve the country’s road network. 

By 2019, Egypt climbed to 28th place in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report in terms of the quality of its road infrastructure, compared to 118th place in 2014.

Additionally, the country recorded a 9.3 percent drop in traffic injuries in 2021 compared to 2020, according to a recent report released by the country’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) in July 2022.

The number of traffic injuries across Egypt in 2021 was 51,511, down from 2020’s 56,789, the CAPMAS report said.
