In a video-in with El-Hayat El-Youm program on El-Hayat TV Channel, Mohieldin explained that the first of these is the initiative of the five major regional roundtables, through which Egypt aims to showcase at COP27 the best climate change projects on all continents.
The five roundtables, which are organised by Egypt in cooperation with UN regional committees and UN high-level climate champions, will put climate projects, investors, companies, international financing entities, development banks and other stakeholders at one table. The aim is to implement projects that actually help achieve climate action goals, according to a previous statement by Mohieldin’s media office.
The second axis, Mohieldin said, is the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects, through which Egypt aims to link local development action to related global efforts.
The initiative, which is part of the National Climate Change Strategy 2050, will chart a map for each governorate's smart green projects, connecting them with funding agencies and attracting the necessary investments.
Mohieldin called for highlighting the efforts exerted all over Egypt’s governorates to tackle environmental and developmental issues that comply with Egypt’s Vision 2030.
The third axis, Mohieldin said, is to find the best financing tools for climate projects by drawing up plans according to each country’s budget, getting the private sector, civil society and different financing entities involved in financing and implementation.
He pointed out that the climate change issue has the attention of the Egyptian leadership, who have stressed that Egypt’s main goal is pushing for the implementation of the recommendations of the previous conferences.
Egypt can make COP27 a success because of its prominence in the Arab, African and Mediterranean world as well as its strong relationship with all countries, Mohieldin asserted.
Mohieldin added that since Egypt was chosen to host COP27, it has studied the outcomes of the previous editions in order to build on them and advance climate action.
Mohieldin had previously stressed that the world is not on track to fulfil the Paris Agreement to curb the repercussions of climate change.
The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It was adopted by 196 parties in COP21, held in Paris in 2015, and it aims to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees.
