This should be achieved by 2025, said Robinson, the former president of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in a virtual meeting with Yasmine Fouad, Egypt’s environment minister and the ministerial coordinator and envoy of the 27th session of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27).
Fouad emphasised the need to link increasing finances and obtaining them from developed countries in order to let the countries benefit from them to address climate change, especially since there are many countries that suffer from the repercussions of climate change, such as fires, high temperature, floods, torrential rains, and droughts.
She stressed that doubling the adaptation finance and realising the damages caused by climate change will be highlighted by women leaders on Gender Day during the COP27 in Egypt.
In previous statements, Fouad noted that Gender Day – on 24 November according to COP27 Agenda – is expected to focus on the needed policies, potential solutions, and financing mechanisms that could enable women to face up to the impacts of climate change.
As Egypt is hosting the COP27 on behalf of Africa, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry – the president-designate of the COP27 –previously said that Egypt would speak up for Africa's aspirations to cope with climate change at the conference.
According to the UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt Mahmoud Mohieldin, Africa produces no more than three per cent of the world’s total greenhouse-gas emissions that cause global warming.
“Although Africa has contributed little to global emissions, it is already being disproportionately affected by impacts of climate change,” Mohieldin said, stressing the importance of adopting a climate action-oriented path that can deliver on both Africa's development and climate goals.
He underlined the need to stimulate private investments in clean energy in Africa, which is in great need of further efforts to push the climate change agenda.
Founded in 2007 by Nelson Mandela, the Elders is an international NGO of public figures, including former presidents and prime ministers.
