Egypt court brings forward appeal session challenging Constituent Assembly

MENA, Wednesday 11 Jul 2012

Appeal against constitutionality of Egypt's controversy-prone constitution-drafting body to take place on 17 July rather than 23 September

The Administrative Court is expected to examine an appeal challenging the constitutional legitimacy of the MPs mandated with selecting members of Egypt's Constituent Assembly – mandated with drafting a new constitution – on Tuesday.

The court session had initially been scheduled for 23 September.

In April, a first Constituent Assembly was formally dissolved by order of Egypt's Supreme Administrative Court after non-Islamist members withdrew from the constitution-drafting body to protest its perceived monopolisation by Islamist political forces.
