Shoukry, who is also the president-designate of COP27, which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh in November, made the comments during a speech at a meeting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Shoukry said that COP27 will also address other African concerns on climate, including a just transition towards a green economy, adaptation to climate change and the loss and damage suffered as a result, as well as providing appropriate climate finance for developing countries.

Shoukry added that the global event will adopt a comprehensive approach that ensures the effective engagement of all stakeholders in international climate action, including the private sector and civil society.

During the meeting, the Egyptian foreign minister also conveyed the greetings of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto on assuming his duties as CAHOSCC coordinator, noting that Africa is counting on the committee to enhance climate change-related African action.

Meeting with US Chamber of Commerce in New York

Addressing an event organised by the American Chamber of Commerce on the sidelines of the General Assembly, Shoukry said that Egypt seeks to reach balanced results on all priorities of international climate action, especially issues of adaptation to climate change, mitigation of its effects, and the provision of climate finance, Shoukry said.

Shoukry also said that the private sector in developing countries has a special responsibility to shift towards environmentally-friendly economies by investing in the green economy and providing technological solutions.

The FM also expressed Egypt's hope that COP27 will contribute to implementing climate-related pledges, and that recent global developments will not affect efforts to confront climate change.

Shoukry affirmed Egypt's confidence that cooperation among all bodies concerned, including the private sector, is necessary to achieve climate action goals.
