Zamalek coach Jesualdo Ferreira said on Saturday that his main target for this season is delivering a long-awaited African Champions League crown, having already won the Egyptian Premier League last term.

"In the last two seasons, Zamalek won the league title but they haven't won the African Champions League for 20 years," Ferreira told Portuguese sports newspaper Record.

"Zamalek reached the Champions League final under Jaime Pacheco but they lost the title to [arch-rivals] Ahly two years ago, so our main target is to win it this time around."

The Cairo giants won the last of their five Champions League trophies in 2002. They have reached the final twice since then, losing to South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 and Ahly in 2020.

Ferreira made an instant impact after he was appointed as Zamalek's coach for a second spell last March, with the team beating the odds en route to an unlikely second consecutive league triumph.

He helped plug the gaps left by the departure of several key players at a crucial stage of the season by injecting fresh flood, with some young players making the difference when it mattered most.

"We have many good players but there are also others who lack some football basics," Ferreira said.

The 76-year-old won a remarkable domestic double with Zamalek in his first stint with the team in 2014-2015.

He also led Zamalek to the league title last season as well as the 2020-21 Egypt Cup trophy.

Ferreira said he is not yet sure when he is going to call it a day.

"I still have one more season in my contract with Zamalek and I can't predict what will happen in the future," he added.
