Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, two Russian airlines – Aeroflot and Ural Airlines – suspended flights in March to and from Egypt and several other countries due to the “circumstances that prevent the performance of flights."

Aeroflot flights to Cairo from the Russian city of Sochi resumed in April, according to Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency.

Ria Novosti also reported at the time that the airline “Russia,” which is a subsidiary of Aeroflot, would launch flights in April from Sochi to 17 foreign destinations, including Cairo.

Egyptian officials have repeatedly said that the decisions to suspend flights to Egypt from Russia and Ukraine due to the war in Ukraine were a “big hit” to the Egyptian tourism sector as both countries are main exporters of tourists to Egypt.

According to Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko, about 125,000 Russian tourists visited Egypt during the first two weeks of 2022 and that 700,000 Russian tourists visited Egypt in 2021.
