In media statements to TV show titled “My Responsibility” on El-Sada Balad TV channel, Tag El-Din added that there is also the need for kidney and liver transplants in Egypt, without giving more details on the pre-clinical lung transplant trials.
Egypt has had laws regulating organ transplant and donations since 2010, he added.
Egypt started liver transplants in 2013. According to the Doctors Syndicate, an average of 370 liver transplant operations are conducted annually in the country across private and public hospitals, including the Nasser Medical institute.
Awad El-Din’s statements came hours after President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi issued directives on Monday to establish the largest organ transplant centre in Africa and the Middle East.
The centre will be established in cooperation with international companies as part of the Cairo’s new integrated medical city, which is being developed on the premises of the Nasser Medical Institute in a meeting attended by top health officials including Minister of Health Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar and Tag El-Din.
Tag El-Din also highlighted the President’s directives to accelerate the establishment of pharmaceuticals warehouses nationwide to cover the current and future needs.
The presidential adviser stated that the warehouses are already being built to house the country’s strategic stock of medical and pharmaceutical supplies in light of the pressure from wars and supply chain crises that have impacted the importation of supplies.
