The interior ministry has enforced a crowd ban since February's Port Said disaster
Zamalek’s hardcore supporters (Ultras White Knights) demanded Saturday that Egyptian authorities explain their failure to end a crowd ban that has been in place since February’s Port Said disaster.
The interior ministry has refused to allow spectators to attend any game in Egypt since the country’s worst-ever football tragedy left dozens dead and hundreds injured.
“The dismantled regime used to impose its ideas by force, and that eventually led to our great revolution. We are now building a new country on the basis of cooperation and justice,” Ultras White Knights said on its Facebook page.
“And we, as ultras groups, offered solutions to many problems ... but we were surprised with the indifferent response we got [from the authorities].
“We now want all the concerned parties to announce valid reasons for the existence of the crowd ban. We hope you take into consideration the fact that your response will shape our decision regarding the upcoming games,” the statement added.
Zamalek’s anticipated African Champions League game against archrivals Ahly, scheduled for 22 July, will be played behind closed doors at Cairo’s Military Academy Stadium.
