The 27-year-old picked up the injury during Zamalek's 2-0 victory over Smouha in their opening Egyptian Premier League game on Wednesday. He was taken off in the first half after attempting to block a shot from an opponent.
Zamalek said in a statement that El-Wensh will be sidelined for between four to six months. He will undergo surgery abroad, the statement read.
"The Egypt national team are responsible of the player’s injury because he sustained the injury during national team duty. After returning to the team, the injury was exacerbated," Zamalek's outspoken chairman Mortada Mansour said, without providing evidence.
El-Wensh joined Zamalek’s trainings last week after recovering from a muscle injury that sidelined him during the White Knights African Champions League two-leg game against Burundi's Flambeau du Centre.
Earlier in the week, Zamalek's medical staff gave him the green light to take part in the game against Smouha.
El-Wensh, who has helped Zamalek win nine trophies since joining the team from Talae El-Geish in 2016, has made 206 appearances with the team in all competitions.
He scored 10 goals and provided four assists.
