El-Aziz MEKO A-200 frigate arrives at Alexandria naval base

A frigate built by German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) arrived at Alexandria naval base Wednesday to join Egypt's navy fleet, the Egyptian Armed Forces announced.

According to the Egyptian Armed Forces, the new MEKO A-200 frigate, named "El-Aziz" is 121 metres in length and can travel up to 6,800 nautical miles.

It has a displacement of 3,931 tons and its maximum speed is 28 knots. It is the first of four MEKO A-200 frigates contracted by Egypt and Germany.

During the reception held for the arrival of the frigate, the Commander of the Egyptian Navy Ashraf Atwa expressed thanks to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and to Minister of Defense and Military Production Mohamed Zaki. He also thanked the German Navy and TKMS.

Atwa stressed the Armed Forces' keenness on implementing a comprehensive strategy to develop and modernise the Egyptian naval fleet to enhance security and stability in areas of operation.

Egypt had acquired four submarines before also manufactured by Thysesenkrupp Marine Systems.
