Egypt, US have common understanding on Middle East issues, Sisi tells Biden

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Friday that there has always been a common understanding between Egypt and the United States regarding all issues related to the Middle East region.

According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi and Biden discussed in the closed talks the latest developments in Palestine, and the US president expressed appreciation for Egypt’s relentless and pivotal efforts in this issue.

For his part, El-Sisi said that Egypt believes in a fair and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with international law.

The two leaders also discussed counterterrorism, and Biden praised Egypt’s success in this regard and said that the US supports Egypt’s counterterrorism efforts.

El-Sisi and Biden also discussed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), where El-Sisi said that Egypt wishes to protect its water security by reaching a legally binding agreement with Ethiopia on the GERD, and thus comes the importance of the US role in solving this crisis. 

The two presidents also exchanged views about a number of regional and international issues including the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and its negative impact worldwide, especially on food and energy, in addition to the latest developments in Libya, Yemen and Syria.

El-Sisi said Egypt believes in solving these crises by reaching political settlements based on enforcing the nation state and ending the presence of foreign forces and mercenaries in the region.

According to the White House, President Biden expressed the US’ solidarity with Egypt in the face of the global economic and food security challenges caused by Russia’s war on Ukraine, as well as his support for Egypt’s water rights. 

The US president also stressed the importance of human rights and respect for fundamental freedoms.
