Egyptian authorities release another batch of 30 pretrial detainees

According to member of the committee and MP Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, 30 pretrial detainees were released on Tuesday as a result of the collaboration between the committee, the public prosecution and the Ministry of interior as well as the collaboration between the committee and other state bodies.

Members of the committee shared photos of the released detainees embracing their family members outside the prison.

This is the latest batch of pretrial detainees released since the re-activation of the Presidential Pardon committee in April.

Over 1,000 pretrial detainees have been released so far, with 15 prisoners receiving presidential pardons.

The committee, first formed in 2016, receives suggestions on names of prisoners to be considered for a presidential pardon from parties and political entities such as the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) and parliament’s Human Rights Committee.

The committee also receives suggestions directly through its website.

The scope of the work of the committee has been expanded to include imprisoned debtors.
