The national agency said it recorded 2.25 million unemployed individuals in Q3/2022 -- from July to September -- up from 2.15 million in the second quarter of 2022.
The rate is 1.8 percent higher than in Q3/2021.
Gender and age
The third quarter recorded 1.307 million unemployed males and 943,000 unemployed females.
People between 15 and 29 years old had the highest rate of unemployment at 61.9 percent.
Among 15-19 year-old people, the unemployment rate grew to 7.2 percent (8.3 percent for males and 5.7 percent for females) in the third quarter, compared to 7.1 percent in the second quarter (8.4 percent for males and 5.5 percent for females).
Among 20-24 year-old people, the unemployment rate jumped to 30 percent (27.7 percent for males and 33.2 percent for females) in the third quarter, compared to 27.6 percent in the second quarter (26.7 percent for males and 28.9 percent for females).
Among 25-29 year-old people, the unemployment rate declined to 24.7 percent (25 percent for males and 26.6 percent for females) in the third quarter, compared to 26.6 percent in the second quarter (25.7 percent for males and 27.8 percent for females).
Among 30-69 year-old people, the unemployment rate declined to 38.1 percent (39.1 percent for males and 36.7 for females) in the third quarter, compared to 38.6 percent in the second quarter (39.2 percent for males and 37.8 percent for females).
Geographical breakdown
CAPMAS said that the unemployment rate reached 10.8 percent in urban areas in the third quarter, increasing slightly compared to 10.6 percent in the second quarter of 2022, while it declined compared to 11.4 percent in the third quarter of 2021.
The unemployed rate in the countryside reached 4.7 percent, increasing slightly in the third quarter compared to 4.5 percent in the second quarter of 2022 as well as to 4.4 percent in the third quarter of 2021.
Employment rates
According to CAPMAS, the employment rate saw a 0.9 percent increase from July to September 2022, with the total number of employed people in Egypt reaching 30.264 million, up from 29.985 million in the second quarter.
CAPMAS added that there was an increase of 180,000 employed people.
The labour force in urban areas reached 13.4 million people compared to 16.864 million in the countryside. The number of employed males increased to 25.321 million, compared to 4.943 million females in the third quarter.
In April, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected that Egypt’s unemployment would fall to 6.9 percent in 2022 and 2023.
It raised its projections for the country’s real GDP growth in 2022 by 0.3 percent to reach 5.9 percent, up from 5.6 percent expected in January, before slowing down to five percent in 2023 in its World Economic Outlook report.
