The initiative was launched during the Solutions Day of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) taking place in Egypt’s city of Sharm El-Sheikh 6 to 18 November.
It is meant to increase the role of cities in facing climate change by developing a strategic plan to achieve multidimensional sustainability and implementing projects and programs to achieve sustainable development, the international cooperation ministry said in a statement.
During the launch, El-Mashat said that the initiative is set to be integrated with Egypt’s presidential initiative Haya Karima (Decent Life), stressing that such integration will help prepare the countryside for green transformation.
The ministry’s current development cooperation portfolio includes plans to implement 33 ambitious projects, at a value of $1.8 billion, that enhance the sustainability of Egyptian cities, El-Mashat noted.
The World Bank's Sustainable Cities Initiative (SCI) is a multi-year programme that aims to support cities and governmental programmes in implementing their national agendas on enhancing sustainability.
The aim of Solutions Day is to exchange views and expertise and to figure out new, innovative, and comprehensive solutions for the global climate crisis, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and COP27 President Sameh Shoukry said during the opening of the day.
He stressed that tackling climate change and activating various climate solutions require cooperation between all parties concerned with climate action, including governments, the private sector, civil society organisations, regional and international groups, and development partners.
Egyptian ministers have announced today the launch of many initiatives to boost climate action, including the Friends of Greening National Investment Plans for Africa and Developing Countries Initiative, and Low Carbon Transport for Urban Sustainability (LCO2TUS).
