Benoit spoke to Ahram Online on the sidelines of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Initiative ceremony, which was held on Tuesday to mark the fifth anniversary of the programme and honour five Egyptian women scientists enrolled in the programme.

“We are highly committed to women’s empowerment in Egypt, in accordance with Egypt Vision 2030, and to be a catalyst of change as a part of the private sector, which plays a role in the country’s economy in this regard,” Julia said.

“Egypt has taken strides in women’s empowerment over the past few years, and that supports our efforts in this respect as well.

“Gender equity provides more efficiency, raises production and makes work teams stronger throughout businesses, as well as uplifting their performance in all sectors, not just in science,” he added.

Benoit also pointed out that his company is investing roughly €1 billion in scientific research efforts, including in Egypt, adding that the programme has attracted 4,000 female researchers from 110 countries worldwide.

Launched in 1998, the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards aim to improve the position of women in science by recognising outstanding women researchers who have contributed to scientific progress in their societies.
