In a meeting with the House of Representatives’ Social Solidarity Committee, El-Qabbaj said divorce rates are highest among the 20-30 age range.

The number of divorces in 2021 reached 254,777, increasing by 14.7 percent over 2020, according to data issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).

On the other hand, the number of marriage contracts increased by only half a percent in 2021 to 880,041.

The number of divorces in 2020 declined by 5.3 percent compared to 2019, according to CAPMAS.

The government has been working to reduce the number of divorces, including by launching initiatives like Mawadda (“Cordiality”) which aims to raise awareness among youth about the value of marriage.

The initiative was launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Social Solidarity in cooperation with many state institutions as well as Al-Azhar and the Coptic Orthodox Church.
