Egypt's President Morsi meets with Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Secretary General

Mohamed Morsi meets with Turkish secretary general of the OIC Kamal EdDin Ihsanoglu to discuss issues in the Muslim world and August's Islamic Summit in Saudi Arabia

President Mohamed Morsi met with the secretary general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ekmel Eddin Ihsanoglu of Turkey early Saturday.

The meeting at the presidential headquarters mainly revolved around issues in the Muslim world and the 12th Islamic Summit due to take place in Saudi Arabia on 26 and 27 Ramadan (14 and 15 August).

Ihsanoglu stressed the importance of Morsi's electoral success and Egypt's role as one of the largest Muslim countries, noting that the new president had always been attentive to OIC's activities. Syria and the Muslims in Burma were also discussed .

The meeting was also attended by Egypt's Foreign Minister Kamal Amr. Ihsanoglu is to hold a separate meeting on Saturday with the foreign ministry to make all necessary arrangements for the Islamic Summit.

The OIC was formed in 1969 and is one of the largest organisations after the UN. Countries with Muslim populations all over the world are members, differentiating it from other pan-Arab organisations that are limited to the Middle East.

Since his inauguration as Egypt's first post-Mubarak president, Morsi has held several meetings with foreign representatives in Egypt, including Palestine's Hamas chief, Khaled Mashaal, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, the EU's Catherine Ashton, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and others.
