Ahly right-back Akram Tawfik, who spent most of 2022 recovering from a knee injury, sustained a fresh knee injury while participating in the team’s training sessions on Friday and is expected to spend a long time out of action.

“I thank God for everything as the injury is God’s will,” Tawfik, 25, wrote on his Instagram account on Saturday.

“There are people who say my teammate Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Monem caused me the injury but they are wrong as it is all God’s willing,” the Ahly right-back said.

Reports in the Egyptian media said that the defender will undergo medical tests to determine the seriousness of his injury.

The reports also claimed that the player likely suffered a ligament injury and he is expected to spend a longtime out of action.

It is unknown whether he re-injured the same knee as before, or if the new injury is unrelated.

Tawfik returned to Ahly squad ahead of the start on the ongoing Egyptian Premier League season in October, making 11 appearances with the Red Devils so far.

He had been absent from the field since tearing his ACL during national team duty in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last January.
