Midfielder Amr El-Sulaya scored his first double for Ahly since joining the team in 2016 in the 19th and 79th minutes, and substitute Hussein El Shahat scored the third deep in injury time.

The Reds put an end to their struggle after conceding three draws in the past four games to boost their bid to reclaim the league title lost to arch rivals Zamalek for the past couple of seasons.

Now Ahly have 27 points, three points ahead of Zamalek, who lost to Aswan 2-1 earlier in the day, while Pyramids FC remain fourth with 20 points.

Ahly had the first sight of the goal when Karim Fouad’s cross found Shady Hussein unmarked in the area, but his header went easily into the hands of keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy after just six minutes.

Midfielder El-Sulaya fired from 25 yards into the top of the net to break the deadlock in the 19th minute.

After the goal, the Reds sat back in defence while Pyramids FC pressed forward to get the equaliser.

Ramadan Sobhi volleyed a sublime shot but Ahly’s keeper Mohamed El Shennawy deflected it into the corner, and Ali Gabr’s header missed the target from point blank.

Ahly had the chance to extend their lead just before the break when playmaker Mohamed “Afsha” Magdi found Hussein at the far post, but he missed the goal.

El-Sulaya’s double

Pyramids FC picked up where they left off before the interval and kept the pressure on.

They enjoyed ball possession but failed to make their domination count as Ahly’s compact defence kept at bay all their attackers.

At the other end, Afsha missed an easy chance as he headed the ball wide over the bar from point blank.

In the 79th minute, Man-of-the-match El-Sulaya rose above the defence to meet El-Shahat’s corner with a glancing header at the far post to double his team’s lead.

The game was practically over as Ahly players grew in confidence while their opponents were too demoralised to stage a comeback.

El-Shahat finished the game in style as his deflected shot wrong-footed keeper El-Shennawy in the 93rd minute to get his name on the scoresheet.
