Coptic Orthodox Egyptians, who make up to 90 percent of the country’s Christian population, celebrate Christmas on 7 January according to the Julian Calendar.

In his statement, the minister extended Christmas greetings to Egyptian Christians.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly had announced on Sunday that 8 January will be a paid day off for public sector workers.

Christmas, as celebrated by the Copts, has been a public holiday in Egypt since 2003.
