The award, presented for the seventh year in a row, commemorates the birth centenary of late renowned Al-Ahram journalist Mohamed Hassanein Heikal, the guru of Egyptian and Arab journalism who died in 2016.

The foundation presents two awards every year, worth EGP 250,000 each, for scoops and investigative reports with the aim of enabling young Arab journalists to develop their skills and drive excellence in the field of journalism.

The applicants are required to be Arab journalists under the age of 40, working at an Arabic language news outlet.

Established in 2007 by Heikal, the foundation aims to nurture excellence and development in the field of journalism across the Arab world.

Heikal, veteran journalist and the ultimate inside storyteller of key political events in Egypt and across the region after World War II, passed away aged 93.

Heikal had seven decades of experience in journalism and served as editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram daily from 1957 to 1974.

He was an adviser to late President Gamal Abdel-Nasser, the country's second president, and became minister of information in 1970.
